NewsLFC honours David Moores with plaque unveiling at Kirkby Academy
A plaque has been officially unveiled at the Kirkby Academy in memory of former Liverpool chairman and owner David Moores.
The special tribute to Moores, who passed away at the age of 76 in July 2022, recognises his services to the club over a 16-year spell.
The passionate Reds supporter took up the role of chairman in September 1991 and would oversee 10 major honours achieved on the pitch during his tenure.
Those successes included the cup treble of 2000-01 and the Champions League triumph of 2005, masterminded by managers Gerard Houllier and Rafael Benitez respectively, each of whom Moores appointed.
He departed his position on the board in 2007 upon selling his majority stake in the club, though remained an honorary life president.
It was under Moores’ direction, too, that the current Academy site in Kirkby was built and opened, in 1998, to provide a dedicated and modern-day complex for the club’s youth teams and development programmes.
A pitch at the Reds’ youth base has now also been renamed after Moores.
The unveiling event on Thursday was attended by members of the Moores family, as well as club legends Sir Kenny Dalglish, Roy Evans, Sammy Lee and Phil Thompson, Academy director Alex Inglethorpe, and chief legal and external affairs officer Jonathan Bamber.
“We’re extremely pleased to unveil this fitting tribute to our former owner and chairman David Moores, in honour of his stewardship of and devotion to Liverpool Football Club,” said Bamber.
“David will always be a part of this club’s glorious history and remembered as a passionate fan in the boardroom.”
His children, David Moores Jr and Lisa Moores-Pearce, said: “We are really proud that LFC have chosen to honour Dad in this way.
“Development of young players was something that he was passionate about so it’s especially touching that the plaque is here at the Academy on the pitch where young players first play.”
