Liverpool head to Newcastle United on Sunday full of confidence and eager to build on their encouraging display last weekend, says Harvey Elliott.

The Reds' third fixture of the 2023-24 campaign takes them to St. James' Park as they aim to follow up the 3-1 win against AFC Bournemouth with another set of three points.

Overcoming the Magpies will be a tough task, Elliott acknowledges, but last season's 2-0 victory there provides a timely reminder of the capability of Jürgen Klopp's squad.

Previewing this latest encounter, the No.19 told Liverpoolfc.com: "It's going to be another massive challenge.

"Each and every game is going to be a challenge this season, teams are getting better and better and players that are coming in are world-class players as well. It's the Premier League, it's the best league in the world so it's always going to be tough.

"Newcastle, especially with their team and their fans and the way they set out, it's going to be another tough opponent.

"For us, it's about working on these things throughout the week and making sure we apply it at the weekend, which is the main thing.

"Last season we beat them away, so it's proven we can go out and do it – it's just down to us to make sure we apply ourselves and hopefully get the same result."

Liverpool responded after an early setback versus Bournemouth at Anfield to claim victory, their first of the new campaign following the draw at Chelsea on the opening weekend.

Recovering after going behind inside three minutes and then holding on to the points following the dismissal of Alexis Mac Allister are encouraging signs for the tests that lay ahead, Elliott believes.

He continued: "For us, there's improvements there as a team. I feel like we've been performing a lot better and playing good football.

"But as I keep saying, it's just down to us to keep that momentum going and to keep doing that in these games coming up."

Elliott added: "We feel like we could have won the game [at Chelsea]. We had enough chances to put the game [to bed] and we had the offside goal as well. But to get four points from two games, it's a great start and we're just looking to build on it."
