Reaction'It felt unbelievable to score my first Liverpool goal'

The Scotland defender, signed last summer, opened her account for the Reds with a close-range finish in first-half added time of Sunday’s encounter at Prenton Park.

The 1-0 result put Matt Beard’s team three points ahead of United in the battle for fourth spot in the Barclays Women’s Super League.

It also wrapped up a memorable week for the squad, following the 4-3 defeat of reigning WSL champions Chelsea that preceded the victory over United.

“It was unbelievable,” Clark said. “I’ve said it, it’s been a long time coming for me personally. That’s the way I’ve been feeling. To get one this season is good.

“The points are massive and the week has been massive for us as well. To come away with six points is really good for us.”

Liverpool will need a point on the final day of 2023-24 at Leicester City to guarantee fourth position in their second season back at WSL level.

Asked about the feeling within the group after another campaign of significant progress, Clark said: “Probably the same as it feels for the fans!

“There’s a good energy going round the club just now. It’s always been there and we know what we’re capable of on the pitch. You’ve seen the results of that. It’s exciting.”

The No.17 continued: “It’s all I’ve known on the women’s side since coming in this year, but from what I’ve heard and from where we’re going, it’s really exciting.

“There’s a lot of positivity around the club in progressing us as the women’s side, so it’s really exciting.

“Hopefully it can just keep growing season on season. One season at a time, one game at a time. If we try to get more results as we can, I think it’ll help us off the pitch as well.”

Clark also had special words of praise for the team behind the team, explaining why the work of the staff that support the players is so vital to them.

“I don’t think I can probably put into words how much effort – not just the coaching staff but the full staff – put in,” she said.

“It makes it easier for us on the pitch, and at training as well. They put in the hours and we can see it and it really helps us get results like today.”
