Reaction'I'm proud' - Kieran Morrison on Liverpool goal, pre-season, Iraola and more

Andoni Iraola's men are completing a summer tour in the United States as part of their preparations for the 2026-27 campaign.

Morrison scored the opening goal in a 4-2 friendly victory over Premier League counterparts Sunderland on Saturday evening at GEODIS Park in Nashville – his first at senior level for the club.

Following the game, the youngster reflected on the milestone and discussed how the camp is unfolding at their base in Chicago.

Read on for the interview with Liverpoolfc.com.

On a 'big moment' scoring for Liverpool…

Definitely, especially under the new manager. The first goal in pre-season feels very good and I'm proud.

On the assist from Harvey Elliott…

I just got the ball and I didn't really think about it. I just let it overtake me all the time in training and you don't really think about it as much on the pitch. It's just instinct, you just do it. And Harvey, top player! When he's in the No.10 [position] sometimes I roll in and he rolls out. It's a good combination.

On whether the goal was from the work being put in under Iraola…

Yeah, definitely. It's like a new philosophy this past week. Whatever he's been doing at Bournemouth, it's obviously worked. He's one of the best managers in the league. He's come here and he's taught me varied and different playing styles. He's telling me things I've never heard of before. It's a credit to Andoni.

On taking things on board as a young player…

Definitely. Obviously I take it game by game. I was just glad to get on the plane in the first place for pre-season and I'm glad he trusted me to start. I'm glad to help the team with a goal. We'll see where that takes me now.

On his ambitions for the season…

I want to play as many minutes as I can. I want to help the team as much as I can. I want to help the team and I want to score at Anfield. Last season I played two games but it wasn't to my standard. I was on the bench a lot and I know I can give more.

On his 'hunger' to be a Liverpool player…

Everyone knows the right-wing options are a bit scarce so I'm just trying to put my foot down whether I'm just an option for him [Iraola] to think about. That's the main thing. Whatever I can do I'm going to do it to the best of my abilities.

On the young players helping each other…

There's so many young players. It's not like I am away with the first team, it's like I am away with my mates! Rio [Ngumoha] and Trey [Nyoni], they broke through last season and we're looking to them and we know that it can happen, especially at Liverpool. It's been happening every year. It's why youngsters break through. We're edging each other on to see who will be the next one. I'm going to be selfish and say it's me! We'll just see from there.

On which senior players he has looked to for advice…

Everyone. Harvey is still so young but he has been top. Fede [Chiesa] and Dom [Szoboszlai] especially. If you look up to him, he does so much after training, he does finishing and free-kicks and you see these senior players doing it. They're the best players in the world and if you're not doing it as a youngster you're not going to get as far as they've come. We need to just keep working hard and keep looking at them for inspiration.
