Reaction'I was confident' - Florian Wirtz on scoring first Liverpool goal
Florian Wirtz revealed the happiness felt in scoring his first Liverpool goal against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday afternoon.
The No.7 opened his account in the Premier League as he struck from inside the box past goalkeeper Jose Sa during the first half of the 2-1 victory at Anfield.
Wirtz's effort added to Ryan Gravenberch's strike - which came only a minute earlier - and would ultimately prove to be the difference on the day, with Santiago Bueno on target for the visitors in the second period.
"It was very nice," Wirtz told Premier League Productions post-match. "The feeling on the pitch with the fans around [the stadium]… I was very happy and I liked it!
"I was confident that I would score one day. Of course, I wanted to start scoring and assisting earlier, but it was like this. I had to accept it, but I just knew that it would come, and I just tried to keep going like that."
Liverpool were forced to work hard for the three points in the closing stages after Wolves reduced the deficit following the half-time break.
Wirtz was among those to earn recognition for his key role in the victory afterwards, having been voted Liverpoolfc.com's Carlsberg Player of the Match by supporters.
"I think we played a brilliant first half and every time we lost the ball we got it directly back," he continued.
"Everyone was working really hard, but then in the second half in the last 20 to 25 minutes we made it harder for ourselves and difficult. To be honest, I cannot explain why. We have to talk about this in training because we have to change that."
On moving to seven games unbeaten and being back in the top four, he added: "That's the way we want to do it, we want to be there, and we want to be top of the table.
"It's not been an easy start for us, but I think in the last games we have been doing better and better and getting the points. We are just trying to win every game now and today we had the next three points, so it's good."
