NewsHugo Ekitike shares message after Southampton sending-off

A half-time introduction for Liverpool in the Carabao Cup third-round tie at Anfield, Ekitike went on to tap home the winner from Federico Chiesa’s cross.

Alexander Isak had earlier put the Reds in front but Shea Charles equalised for the Championship visitors a quarter of an hour from the end.

Ekitike’s Kop-end finish was his fifth goal since signing for the club in the summer.

However, removing his shirt in the celebration meant he received a second yellow card in the game and will be suspended against Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Saturday.

“I was so excited tonight to help the team achieve another victory here in our home for my first Carabao Cup match,” he posted on social media.

“The emotion got the better of me tonight. My apologies to all the Red family.

“Thanks to the fans who always support us and to my teammates for securing this victory.”
