In the latest episode of the 'We are Liverpool' podcast, Liverpool FC Women's Rylee Foster opens up on the 'miracle' of surviving a near-death experience as she now targets a return to the pitch.

Back in October 2021, the Canadian goalkeeper's life changed forever when she was on her way to a Drake concert in Finland.

A single-car accident, where the weather played a factor, saw Foster flung 30 metres away from the wreckage, leaving her neck 'fractured in seven pieces', her lower back broken in two places, among countless other serious injuries.

"Considering my injuries, you should die from [the] impact," Foster tells hosts Robbie Fowler and Peter McDowall. "You see the pictures of the car, no-one should survive that."

Thankfully she defied the odds, but at various points during her lengthy recovery process she was told her football career was over.

But now, growing stronger physically and mentally with each passing day, the 24-year-old has been informed by medical professionals that the decision whether to play again is now solely down to her call.

She says: "I could call it quits right now, I really could – but what's that going to do for me? I'm going to live with regret my whole life wondering if I could have done it, could I have played again?

"I'm going to push myself to the furthest limit. I hope it ends up being back on the pitch, I hope it ends up with me... I mean, saying the World Cup now is a bit ambitious, but in the Olympics the following year. I hope it ends up being there because that's truly what I want to do and that's what I'm ready for.

"I've hit that moment in my rehab where I'm going, 'Mentally, I'm ready for it. And physically, I'm stronger.' I think I'm going to be a stronger version of myself in all aspects."
