ReactionHow grandma helped inspire Katie Stengel's derby goal

The Liverpool FC Women forward netted the equaliser in a 1-1 draw at Goodison Park after Gabrielle George had opened the scoring for Everton.

Bringing Taylor Hinds’ long-range effort under her control inside the Blues box, Stengel sweetly placed a left-footed finish across the goalkeeper into the bottom corner.

The goal ultimately gained another point for Matt Beard’s team in the Barclays Women’s Super League – and will have also kept grandma happy to boot.

“My grandma texts me before every game, ‘You haven’t scored in a while!’ She keeps me honest,” Stengel told Sky Sports post-match.

“I was due. This is the second time this season I have stolen Taylor’s shot, so it has worked out well for us.”

The American and her Reds teammates nevertheless left Goodison Park disappointed not to have claimed the maximum three points.

Beard’s charges mounted sustained spells of pressure after falling behind, while a Leighanne Robe conversion from a corner-kick routine that would have made it 2-1 was disallowed.

“I think we’re frustrated, we were in that game for 90 minutes and we thought we could have come away with three points,” added Stengel.

“And it would have been huge, especially coming after the last time we played them. We should have had a couple more chances, so it’s disappointing.”
