Reaction'He owes me a few now!' - Cody Gakpo on his link-up with Alexander Isak

A pair of excellent forward passes from Gakpo aided Isak in clinically scoring twice for Liverpool inside the opening 10 minutes against Ipswich Town.

The brace proved the difference between the sides at Portman Road as the Reds claimed their first three points of the Premier League campaign.

Gakpo had also been the provider for Isak’s strike in the previous fixture versus Nottingham Forest at Anfield.

Asked about the potential for a ‘special’ link-up developing between them, Gakpo told Sky Sports: “We will see.

“Obviously, as attackers we always train together and we try to get to know each other even better every time again.

“Hopefully we can assist each other many times – he owes me a few assists now!”

Gakpo added of the overall performance from Andoni Iraola’s team on the evening: “I think it was a great game from our side.

“Obviously, some things we have to improve still, but a much-needed win from us.

“Very happy that we got the three points and happy with the performance.”

Liverpool now head into a run of three home matches in the space of a week across three different competitions.

Atletico Madrid in the Champions League, Fulham in the Premier League and Tottenham Hotspur in the Carabao Cup await from Wednesday onwards.

“Hopefully beautiful things ahead,” said Gakpo of the hopes under new head coach Iraola.

“We had a good pre-season together and we have to build on that.

“A first win – hopefully the first of many. Outstanding support, like always. We are all together.”
