ReactionHarvey Elliott: We have to make sure we put this right

The Reds suffered just their second loss in 17 games in all competitions this season, as goals from Aron Donnum, Thijs Dallinga and Frank Magri gave the Ligue 1 side victory in southern France.

Jürgen Klopp’s team remain top of Group E with two fixtures left to play, and need only one win to secure progress to the knockout stages, but Elliott admitted they were left disappointed by their performance against Toulouse.

“We can play much, much better and we weren’t there really around the pitch tonight,” the midfielder told Liverpoolfc.com post-match.

“We have another important game on Sunday against Brentford, which will be another massive test for us, and we just need to put this defeat behind us and use it as motivation to go out on the weekend to make sure we put it right and the things we didn’t do right tonight make sure we do that at the weekend.”

On the ending to the game, with Jarell Quansah’s disallowed goal making it hard to take…

It is. In all fairness, it just summed up our night and I don’t think we deserved anything from tonight. It was just one of those games when nothing was going for us but we didn’t really deserve to win or draw at the end of the day. We’ve got to take it on the chin, we’ll reflect and make sure it doesn’t happen again.

With VAR and stuff you can never celebrate too early and we were just waiting around to see what the decision was. They gave it and then they didn’t give it so I’m not too sure what was going on. I’m not the referee, I’m just here to play, so we were waiting for the decision and unfortunately it was disallowed.

On how frustrating it was that it just didn’t happen for the Reds in the final third on the night…

Definitely. They sat back and made it very hard for us. We only had limited opportunities and it was just down to us to take them. I had a few opportunities I felt I could have done better with and we had a few more, but as I said, we weren’t really there throughout the whole game and we deserved to not really come away with anything. We just need to keep going and making the right decisions and the right choices in the next game. We will reflect on this one and make sure we put that into the next one.

On still being in control of the group and playing at home against LASK next…

Absolutely. We are good enough to go out and win every single game in this competition and that’s what we strive to do and that’s what we want to do. Obviously it didn’t happen tonight but with this competition there’s always many more games around the corner. We just need to dust ourselves down, reflect on the bad situations and make sure these things don’t happen again. As I keep saying, we need to use it as motivation for the next games and lift ourselves back up and we go again.

On the importance of going into the international break with a win against Brentford on Sunday…

There’s nothing better than a win to go into the international break and that’s what we want to do. We will fly home tonight, come in tomorrow and prepare straight away and make sure we are right, because it’s not going to be an easy game, no game in the Premier League is, and they will come at us full throttle. We need to make sure we put things right and go into the international break with a positive result hopefully.
