InterviewHarvey Elliott: It's three more points and we just need to keep building

On a dramatic afternoon in south London, Elliott’s 91st-minute strike completed another superb comeback from Jürgen Klopp’s side, who had trailed to Jean-Philippe Mateta’s second-half penalty before levelling through Mohamed Salah’s 200th Reds goal.

Speaking to Liverpoolfc.com after the game, Elliott, who recorded his first goal of the season on the day, said he was thrilled to be able to produce such a telling – and vital – contribution for his team.

“Merry Christmas!” the midfielder said. “It was another tough game against another tough opposition, another hard ground to come to but it’s three more points and we just need to keep building on it.”

On his goal, fired home past Palace goalkeeper Remi Matthews from 20 yards, the England U21 international added: “It just kept opening up nicely for me, I took a few touches and I was in and around the box and just thought, ‘Why not?’ and just hit it!

“I saw it hit the net and next thing I knew I was off on my knees! It was a great feeling for me but now we need to build on it and keep taking these opportunities and keep scoring more.”

Elliott had been introduced, along with Curtis Jones, with Liverpool 1-0 down in the 74th minute, and the pair were instrumental in helping turn the game around.

Jones laid on the equaliser for Salah, before Elliott sent the away end into raptures with his late screamer.

Asked what Klopp had told his two young substitutes before their introduction, Elliott said: “Just try to make a difference. He sent us on full of confidence and with the freedom to just go and play our way, express ourselves and more importantly help the team.

“We are all together and no matter if you are starting or on the bench you need to be ready to make an impact and today we did that.”

Elliott also paid tribute to Salah, who in equalising became only the fifth player in Liverpool’s history to reach 200 goals for the club, doing so in only 327 matches.

He said: “Once again, what an incredible player and an incredible person. There’s no better person to score their 200th goal and he deserves it more than anyone.

“We are all behind him and so chuffed for him. I gave him a bit of banter saying it was an own goal and he wasn’t having any of it! But, as I say, what a guy and what a person to look up to.”

Reflecting on the importance of the victory, another one in which Liverpool have had to come from behind this season, Elliott added: “It’s not all going to be glitz and glamour, we have to sometimes do the dirty work and I think that’s what we did.

“We defend as a team and attack as a team to get these results, and to get where we want to in this league we need to do the dirty work.

“But once again I think we showed that resilience and determination to come back, especially with our fans who are always behind us.

“It’s great to have such supportive fans and cheering us on throughout the whole game, and hopefully we have sent them all home happy.”
