Liverpool FC Women defender Hannah Silcock has enjoyed her first major success of the season – before a ball has even been kicked.

The Scouser was one of thousands of young people across the country who were anxiously awaiting the results of their A-Levels earlier this week.

The 18-year-old travelled with her parents to the Blue Coat School in Wavertree, Liverpool, on Thursday morning to collect her results after two years of study.

“I made my mum and dad wait outside as I was a bit nervous!” Silcock told Liverpoolfc.com. “But it was good news and I got an A in biology and Bs in maths and chemistry. It’s what I needed to get into my first-choice university, the University of Liverpool.”

Centre-back Silcock has been studying for her A-Levels while continuing life as a top-flight footballer with LFC Women.

She signed her first professional contract last autumn after turning 18 and made five appearances for manager Matt Beard’s side during the 2022-23 season.

“I’ve been in the academy since the age of eight so I’ve been used to juggling football and school,” she added. “But I suppose it did get quite tough at times with the A-Levels and being with the first team.

“I’d be at school on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, and then be with LFC on Wednesdays and Fridays. The teachers were brilliant and all helped me, as well as my classmates.

“I’d get home from football and spend the evenings catching up with what I’d missed but I knew it was only going to be for a while.

“I didn’t really have time for any other fun but football is fun for me and I got the chance to see my friends every day at school - but there were definitely no parties!”

The No.34 also had words of thanks for two other important groups as she plans to put her university career on hold to concentrate fully on football.

She said: “I’m so grateful for everything that Matt and the staff at LFC Women did for me. They were so supportive and Matt gave me time off when I needed it.

“I was able to come in on the evenings and do work with Chris [Underwood, sports therapist] so I still got my football in, so I’m really thankful to him too.

“My mum and dad are really happy with the results and they’ve been so supportive. Whether driving me to school or taking me to training, I couldn’t have done anything without them.”

Silcock is already an England U19 international and Reds boss Beard is certain she has a bright future ahead of her.

“I think it’s an absolutely incredible achievement for Hannah,” he said.

“I hope her getting such good results while continuing her footballing career will act as an inspiration for other young people who may be in a similar position, and [it] is due reward for all her hard work.”
