Pre-season tourA guide to Hong Kong's Kai Tak Stadium
Saturday’s fixture (7.30pm kick-off local time, 12.30pm BST) is another milestone occasion for the arena in its opening year of use.
Capable of hosting up to 50,000 spectators, Kai Tak Stadium provides the centrepiece of Kai Tak Sports Park, Hong Kong’s largest sports and entertainment hub.
It is located in Kowloon and was assembled at the site of a former airport.
The park officially opened in March 2025 after construction began in 2019, and is described by the tourism board as “the ultimate destination for sports enthusiasts, families and food lovers alike”.
Alongside the stadium are other sporting facilities – including a 10,000-seater indoor venue – plus a wide range of restaurants and shops.
Investment in the construction of Kai Tak Sports Park totalled almost US$4 billion.
The stadium features a retractable roof and its pitch can change between natural turf for sport and other surfaces for concerts and cultural events.
The eye-catching facade of the venue, which is themed ‘Pearl of the Orient’, is made up of more than 27,000 triangular aluminium panels whose colour shifts with natural light to create an impressive shimmering effect.
It hosted the annual Hong Kong Sevens rugby tournament as part of its inaugurating events, followed by four dates on Coldplay’s ‘Music of the Spheres’ world tour.
A maiden football game then took place in June as more than 42,000 fans witnessed Hong Kong defeat India 1-0 in Asian Cup qualifying, thanks to a stoppage-time penalty from Stefan Pereira.
Liverpool’s match against Milan forms part of the 2025 Hong Kong Football Festival, which will also include a clash between Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur on July 31.
The Reds – returning to Hong Kong for the first time since 2017 – and the Serie A side are competing for the Standard Chartered Trophy.
