NewsGareth Taylor column: Impact of new signings, fitness update and Women's FA Cup
I thought there were a lot of positives we could take out of our performance against London City Lionesses but I feel we still need to do a lot better in the final third.
I thought we progressed through to the final third and controlled the game in the first half, but then lost an element of control in the second half and it was more evenly matched.
We built well to the final third and I thought Fisky [Grace Fisk] and Jenna [Clark] played a big part in that. We progressed nicely through midfield but then we just needed to execute that final action just that little bit better, which has been our story of the season really.
For sure, we need to be better in that area and once we can get these reinforcements in during this window and also players back fit like Beata [Olsson], who has scored a lot of goals for us, that will help us.
I do think we are moving in the right direction and overall it was a solid performance. We defended really well when we needed to. We didn't have a lot to do but what we did, we did really well.
While we will look back and think if we had a little more quality in the final third then we could have taken three points, a point is probably better than what the other teams around us got.
West Ham United, Leicester City and Everton didn't take any points, so we have to see that as a positive.
Our new goalkeeper Jennifer Falk brought an assured performance and calmness. She has a wealth of experience. I do believe she will be a very important signing for us and she was very good. She is a big addition for this club.
Alice Bergstrom had a good debut as well and did so well to play for 90 minutes. Because of personnel available, I had to play her forward in an advanced position. It's needs must at the moment because we are very limited in the forward positions.
Alice will grow with us and get better, and I'm absolutely delighted to have got her into this club.
Hopefully Anna Josendal, our new winger we have brought in, won't be too far away. She has got a little niggle. We are hopeful to have her available soon but I think she's going to be a few weeks away.
Beata is a bit closer but it may come too soon for the weekend. So if not, hopefully we will have her back for the Tottenham game, which is our next Barclays Women's Super League fixture.
We are still looking to try to progress in the transfer market this window, so hopefully by the end of the week we can integrate these players into our training. That is going to help us going forward with the games we have coming up.
We take a bit of a break from the WSL programme when we travel to London Bees in the Adobe Women's FA Cup fourth round on Sunday.
We had a good run in the Subway Women's League Cup and we want to do well in the FA Cup as well. Winning breeds confidence, so hopefully we can get the win on Sunday and then get ready for Tottenham in the WSL.
Thank you for your continued support.
YNWA,
Gareth
