LFC WomenGareth Taylor column: Brighton reflections, Chelsea preview and more

I felt it was really tough on us to concede so late on in those circumstances against Brighton, but all in all I do think it was a step forward for us and we’ll take the point.

Each week I feel we are getting closer and closer to a result and the last four or five games now we’ve gone ahead in the game but have just been unable to see it through, which is frustrating.

I have to say that the effort the players put in against Brighton was very high. We put Brighton under a lot of pressure because we knew if we allowed them to play they could cause us a lot of problems.

We had a lot of the play, we broke through lines quite well in midfield and I felt Fuka Nagano did well in that sense.

I thought Fuka, Sam [Kerr] and Kappy [Cornelia Kapocs] were functioning well during that first half but it’s just that final pass and that final decision, although we did hit the bar twice through long-range efforts.

We had a lot of final-third play but didn’t work their goalkeeper enough apart from the long-range stuff. But I do think there were a lot of positives and it was good to see Beata [Olsson] score again after a good delivery from Lily [Woodham].

That is the type of play we are looking for and we want more and more of that: getting those crosses played in across the face of goal, attacking them and really improving that top end of the pitch, final-third play.

I brought Jenna Clark back into the team and I thought she was very good. She and Fisky [Grace Fisk] did really well, they were very aggressive and allowed us to play on the front foot.

The games certainly don’t get any easier and next up for us is Chelsea at St Helens Stadium on Sunday, and then Arsenal in the WSL.

The challenges are high but I do think we are starting to see a little bit of a reward for our efforts and as always we will be giving it everything we have got in front of our supporters on Sunday.

Of course, we also realise how important it is for us to get to January, when the transfer window opens, to add more strength to the squad.

Thank you for your continued support.

YNWA,

Gareth
