ReactionFreddie Woodman describes 'unbelievable' Merseyside derby experience
‘Unbelievable,’ was Freddie Woodman’s description of being thrust into Liverpool’s dramatic Merseyside derby win on Sunday.
Prior to the Reds’ 2-1 victory at Hill Dickinson Stadium, the goalkeeper – a free-transfer recruit last summer – had only taken to the pitch once, in the Carabao Cup in October.
An injury to Giorgi Mamardashvili in the second half against Everton, though, meant Woodman had to jump into action in the Premier League.
And he played his part in Arne Slot’s men going on to claim three points, with Virgil van Dijk’s header in the 100th minute the difference.
“It was a moment that I was waiting for and probably ready for as well,” Woodman told Liverpoolfc.com post-match.
“I’ve trained hard all season. I didn’t think it would come but it’s obviously amazing to do it in a Merseyside derby and then to win it like we did was unbelievable.
“It was a really nice moment for me and a nice moment for my family as well, so I’m pleased.”
Mamardashvili suffered a wound as a result of a collision in a futile attempt to prevent Beto from equalising for Everton.
The hosts had drawn themselves level following an opener by Mohamed Salah during the first half.
“I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t nervous,” admitted Woodman. “Being a part of this massive club, you have moments where you are a little bit nervous.
“But, to be honest, I thought to myself as I ran on, I just saw our back four and thought, ‘I should be alright, you know, as they are proper players.’ I thought I wouldn’t be too busy and, to be fair, they looked after me.
“It was just unbelievable to make my debut in the Premier League and to win like we did was special.”
Afterwards, Arne Slot spoke optimistically of Mamardashvili not being sidelined for long, and on Monday the Georgian himself shared a positive message.
Liverpool are already without No.1 stopper Alisson Becker due to injury.
Woodman insists he will ensure to be ready for whenever another opportunity arises.
“Ali if he plays is the best goalkeeper in the world,” added the 29-year-old. “I hope he is back fit and I hope Giorgi is going to recover well.
“I will just keep doing my role to the best I can and that’s exactly what I’ve tried to do all season, just try to be ready for 20 minutes or 10 minutes when needed.”
