NewsForever Reds supports Darby Rimmer March of the Day with £5k donation

Forever Reds, LFC’s official former players’ association, has donated £5,000 to support this year’s event, organised by the Darby Rimmer MND Foundation.

Among those showing their support were David Fairclough, Emile Heskey, Chris Kirkland, Rickie Lambert, Dominic Matteo and Stephen Wright.

Stephen Darby – who played six times for Liverpool’s senior team between 2008 and 2010 – was diagnosed with MND at the age of 29. He attended the start of this year’s March of the Day walk alongside his wife, Steph Houghton.

John Aldridge, chairman of Forever Reds, said: “It’s great to support this year’s March of the Day with this £5,000 donation as we know it will make a difference to the charity and shows our support for one of our own.

“We are wishing everyone taking part good luck for the challenge ahead.”

In 2024 and 2025, the Darby Rimmer MND Foundation staged its first two March of the Day events. Together, the events in the north and London/south-east of England raised more than £370,000.

The club has previously supported the charity at a pre-season friendly in 2019 following Stephen’s diagnosis. The sell-out encounter at Bradford City helped raise more £275,000 to kick start the charity.

This year’s event is the biggest yet and will span 340 miles over six days, visiting 45 football and rugby league grounds.

The challenge will support both the Darby Rimmer MND Foundation and Leeds Hospitals Charity, which supports the Rob Burrow Centre for Motor Neurone Disease care.

Hundreds of football and rugby league fans are expected to join sections of the route, including a 160-mile stretch from Liverpool to Stockport, showing their support for the MND community.

Stadiums visited along the route include Anfield, Goodison Park, Hill Dickinson Stadium, St Helens Stadium, Deepdale and Elland Road before completing the walk at the Rob Burrows Centre for MND on Saturday (June 6).

Forever Reds was created to ensure former players always feel part of the LFC family – supporting them, involving them in community initiatives and bringing them together to raise funds for important local causes alongside LFC Foundation.
