NewsEuro 2024: Dominik Szoboszlai makes history but Hungary defeated by Switzerland
Aged 23 years, seven months and 21 days, Liverpool midfielder Szoboszlai became the youngest captain in the competition’s history when leading his country out for their Group A opener at Euro 2024.
And it was his pinpoint cross from which Barnabas Varga headed home midway through the second half to halve Hungary’s deficit in Cologne, where first-half goals by Kwadwo Duah and Michel Aebischer had put Switzerland in charge.
Having been second best throughout the first 45 minutes, Hungary were much improved after the break and a moment of class from Szoboszlai set up Varga to haul them back into the contest.
However, they were unable to force an equaliser and Breel Embolo added a third for the Swiss in stoppage time.
Next up for Hungary is a meeting with hosts Germany in Stuttgart on Wednesday.
