One of Liverpool FC’s greatest ever frontmen set a record on this day in 1969 that is still yet to be surpassed.
Roger Hunt – a man who sits second on the Reds’ all-time top goalscorers list – bagged the only goal of the game against Sheffield Wednesday at Anfield 54 years ago.
The forward’s effort took him past Gordon Hodgson onto 234 strikes in the league, a club record that remains intact to this day.
Hunt was to add 10 more to his tally before departing Merseyside following a glittering spell, leaving his mark of 244 goals in league action for Liverpool as the benchmark.
During an iconic career In L4 between 1958 and 1969, the striker scored a total of 285 goals across all competitions – with his efforts helping the Reds to great on-pitch success.
He played a key role as Bill Shankly's side achieved promotion from the Second Division in 1961-62 and First Division titles then followed in 1963-64 and 1965-66.
Hunt also opened the scoring in the 1965 FA Cup final against Leeds United, when he and his teammates became the first Liverpool side to lift the famous trophy.
