Q&ACeri Holland interview: New signings, playing further forward and Tottenham

Six players have joined Gareth Taylor’s squad this month and a number of those featured in last weekend’s 6-0 victory over London Bees in the Adobe Women’s FA Cup.

The game featured debut goals from Denise O’Sullivan and on-loan Martha Thomas, while Alice Bergstrom came off the bench to net her first two strikes for the club.

Next up on Sunday, the Reds host Tottenham Hotspur at St Helens Stadium in the league, with kick-off set for 11.55am GMT.

Ahead of the game, Holland spoke with Liverpoolfc.com about the positivity at the AXA Melwood Training Centre and why the team are confident they will start to climb the WSL table.

Read the interview below…

On the excitement at Melwood with the new arrivals…

It has been really nice obviously having some new faces in. We are all aware that we needed to make some signings and we’ve done that. We’ve got some really good people through the door, and they are settling in really well.

On the morale-boosting win over London Bees…

To be fair to London Bees, I thought they defended really well and they defended their box well, but we scored some really good goals, and it was a really good performance. I think we were professional and it was good to get into the next round.

On the goals Liverpool scored…

Alice did really well when she came on and her first goal was an absolute banger! It was really nice for her to open her account and then Martha and Denise scored on their debuts, so it was great for them to get on the board.

On Maizie Trueman becoming the club’s youngest ever player in that tie…

Amazing! She comes in every day and is training really well. It was really nice for her to have that moment, which she thoroughly deserved, so I was really happy for her.

On how much she is enjoying her new role in the team playing further forward in the front three…

Yes, I am. It’s different but I’m really enjoying it and I’m learning a lot from Gaz [Taylor] and Chad [Gribble] every day. I’m thoroughly enjoying it.

On Sunday’s home meeting with Tottenham…

They have made a couple of signings as well and they have had a really strong start to the season. It will be a tough game but it’s one we feel is an opportunity for us to go out there and show what we can do, show what we’ve been working on with the new faces in and it’s a really good opportunity for us to go for that first win.

On how much of a boost it would be to get that first WSL win at St Helens Stadium in front of the home crowd…

The fans have been incredible. They are there every game, home and away. Their support means everything to us, and we are fully aware that we need to get that first win on the board. We believe it’s coming - and we believe we are improving in every game.
