NewsAnnual LFC Legends games raise more than £10 million for LFC Foundation
This season’s clash saw a team of former Reds take on BVB greats in front of a record crowd of more than 60,000 supporters, with fans filling the stands to support the club’s official charity and Forever Reds.
Across previous LFC Legends matches at Anfield, more than £10 million has been generated for LFC Foundation, with 100 per cent of the proceeds going towards supporting communities across the Liverpool City Region and beyond.
This year’s game, presented by AXA and played in association with Forever Reds, ended in a 2-2 draw, with Thiago Alcantara and Jay Spearing scoring for the home side.
Funds raised from the match will help to fund LFC Foundation’s employability programmes, which support people in the community to find work, gain qualifications and learn new skills through mentoring and training courses.
The funding will also support the Foundation’s long-term ambitious strategy to support 500,000 people per season by 2030, building on the charity’s existing work across health, learning and employability.
Last season alone, LFC Foundation supported more than 145,000 people across its health, learning and employability programmes, delivering 11,040 sessions and 693 community events at 315 venues, including 206 schools.
More than half of participants came from the top 20 per cent most-deprived areas in the country, highlighting the Foundation’s continued focus on communities with the greatest need.
Through its Red Neighbours initiative, it also donated more than £500,000 worth of food hampers, stadium tours and matchday experiences, while supporting the delivery of 1,000 free meals a week prepared by LFC kitchens for local residents around Anfield, Kirkby and Melwood.
Matt Parish, chief executive of LFC Foundation, said: “The legends matches are always such special occasions, and to have hit the milestone of raising more than £10 million over the legends fixtures at Anfield is an incredible achievement.
“We are so grateful to this year’s management team, former players and to the record number of fans who came to the game to show their support not just for the team but also for LFC Foundation and Forever Reds.
“This year, the money raised will play a vital role in funding our employability programmes, helping participants to gain the skills, experience and confidence they need to access employment.
“Every year, these games remind me of the power of our LFC family coming together to make a difference, and the impact of that support will be felt across our communities in the Liverpool City Region and beyond.”
A proportion of the funds raised will also go towards Forever Reds, the club’s official players association, as well as supporting the BVB Foundation.
