Kenny Dalglish's Reds welcomed Nottingham Forest to Anfield in April 1988 knowing victory would put them on the cusp of a First Division title towards which they had surged with consummate style.

Liverpool purred their way to a stunning 5-0 win – with Ray Houghton breaking the deadlock 18 minutes into the contest thanks to a brilliant strike.

The No.9 gathered the ball, sprinted forward and played a perfect one-two with John Barnes at the edge of the box before neatly placing his finish past the onrushing goalkeeper.

The effort kickstarted a show of attacking brilliance from Liverpool that also included goals from John Aldridge (two), Gary Gillespie and Peter Beardsley.

It left Dalglish's charges within one win of what would be the club's 17th championship, and had no less a figure than Sir Tom Finney declaring: "You couldn't see it bettered anywhere, not even in Brazil. The moves they put together were fantastic."

Dalglish, meanwhile, said: "That was a tremendous performance. We have got six games to win the title, and we need two points.

"Everybody can see how well we can play football, but I think the fact we work so hard is sometimes overlooked in the high level of their football."
