In her latest column, Liverpool FC Women interim manager Amber Whiteley reflects on the Adobe Women's FA Cup quarter-final win at Arsenal and previews Friday night's Anfield meeting with Manchester United in the Barclays Women's Super League.

It was a brilliant day for us at Boreham Wood last Sunday and it was a deserved victory.

It was a great day for all of us and I thought the girls were absolutely brilliant from start to finish. We controlled the game really well and limited Arsenal to only one shot on target. We caused them problems in front of their goal too.

We deserve to be in the semi-final and it was a brilliant day for everyone and for our supporters.

I know it officially has gone down as an own goal from Arsenal goalkeeper Daphne van Domselaar, but Sophie Roman Haug deserves so much credit.

Sophie caused them problems and we could easily have been 2-0 up before our goal came about. She took the chance really well.

I’m so pleased for her because she spent a lot of time out through injury this season. The season has been a bit stop-start for her but I thought she was brilliant for us.

I thought the entire team was brilliant defensively and we controlled the middle of the pitch really well, forced Arsenal to try to either go round us or go over the top, and if they did come through centrally we were on the front foot and really aggressive.

Gemma Bonner has been fantastic since she came back into the team.

The Arsenal game really suited her up against top forwards when she can defend front foot, fast and aggressive. She was brilliant leading at the back for us.

I have got to give a special mention to Rachael Laws, who made her 100th appearance for the club and kept a clean sheet.

I’m made up for Lawsy. To get up to 100 games for Liverpool I think is an amazing achievement and she should be so proud.

Lawsy is a huge part of our dressing room, the staff and players really look up to her and she has been a fantastic servant for this club. One hundred up and hopefully many more to come.

I still believe there is more to come from Lawsy because she always wants to learn and get better. Every season she has improved and that’s a testament to her character and her eagerness to get better and develop herself. She is an absolute pleasure to work with.

We host Manchester United under the Anfield lights on Friday night (7.15pm GMT kick-off) and it’s going to be a very special occasion.

We are all really looking forward to it and it will be a proud moment for me to lead a Liverpool team and be stood on the touchline at Anfield.

Hopefully we can put in another great performance we can all be proud of and our fans can be proud of.

We will turn our focus to that game and we will put everything in to make sure we are ready to go on Friday night.

I know over the years we haven’t had much fortune playing at Anfield but I believe the girls are ready for Friday.

When you first play at Anfield, it is a new experience. But we’ve had loads of games there now to have a really good feel for it.

I believe we are over that hurdle and we can just concentrate on the game plan and the job ahead. We should feel at home there now, so that shouldn’t be a factor.

Manchester United are having a really good season and Marc Skinner has done an excellent job there. They have almost gone under the radar a bit actually. They have been on a really good run, they are really good defensively, haven’t conceded a lot of goals and are a real threat going forward.

They don’t mess about with the ball and they can go forward quickly, so we will have to be at the top of our game to get a result on Friday night. We will put everything into training this week to make sure we are in the best possible place to be able to do that.

Finally, I want to thank our supporters, who have been absolutely fantastic and gave us unbelievable support.

Playing at Anfield under the lights is the sort of stage we want to be playing on and those games we all want to be a part of.

The travelling support at Crystal Palace and Arsenal were absolutely brilliant. They really got behind us and helped get both games over the line, so hopefully they turn out in their numbers on Friday night and they will be our 12th player.

Thank you for your continued support as always.

YNWA,

Amber
