NewsAlexis Mac Allister interview: 'We're in a good moment but need to keep improving'
Alexis Mac Allister has been encouraged by Liverpool's recent performances but insists there can now be no let-up.
The Reds host Manchester City, who are currently second in the Premier League standings, at Anfield on Sunday afternoon.
They do so looking to back up the victories last week over Qarabag and Newcastle United that had a combined scoreline of 10-1.
"We feel like we are in a good moment, in a much better moment than the beginning of the season," Mac Allister told Liverpoolfc.com. "We are improving as a team – which is the most important thing – and now we're looking forward to this amazing game.
"The manager had a really good meeting where he said that we needed to improve in both boxes. That's what we wanted and I think we showed it in the last two games.
"But we were more aggressive, we pressed a little bit more. That's what we want and that's what we want to get and be consistent on that. I think it's going to be key.
"We have many players that are injured, so it's not that easy, but we are getting there. I think we are all happy with our last two performances.
"We played against two teams that were a little bit more aggressive and tried to build from the back, which is for us maybe better. We are in a good moment but we need to keep working and keep improving."
Liverpool head into this meeting with Pep Guardiola's side with the rare occurrence of having not played in midweek.
Mac Allister and his teammates will, therefore, go into it fully refreshed and prepared, as they look to avenge the 3-0 defeat in November's reverse fixture.
The Argentinian continued: "I think it's good to have some days off, sometimes you need it. Especially mentally, I think it's good for the brain to have some days off, spend time with the boys without having too many games.
"It was a really important week where we had time to rest but now the focus is on the game.
"They are in a good moment as well. They're a really good team and they showed it against us at the Etihad. I think we are a better team [than then] and we improved quite a lot from that game, but now we need to show it.
"We have our fans with us, which is going to make things easier. We are really looking forward to this game and we want to win and show the fans what we can do."
The improvement Mac Allister mentioned has been aided by the ongoing adaptation to the demands of the Premier League by summer arrivals Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike.
They have now combined for six goals in all competitions this season – more than any other pair who play in England's top flight.
"I think they complement each other really well," Mac Allister said. "They are both big talents and I think everyone can see their quality.
"We can notice that they love to play one-twos and these kind of things, which is really good because they can generate goals and assists in just a moment like this [clicks fingers].
"So, I'm really pleased for them. I think they are showing how good they are. But as I said, I think as a team we still need to improve and that's what we want."
Mac Allister himself has been on the scoresheet three times from midfield in 2025-26 – most recently scoring twice against Qarabag.
With four assists also to his name, the No.10 is keen to improve his final-third output in the remainder of the campaign.
He finished: "I understand my role and sometimes I need to be a little bit deeper, so it's hard to get into the box.
"But, for example, against Qarabag in the second half I played a little bit higher and it was much easier to get to the box.
"It's something that I really like, I want to do more and help the team in that sense. So, hopefully many more to come."
