World Cup glory only heightened Alexis Mac Allister’s desire for trophies – and the Liverpool midfielder hopes to play his part in a first with the club on Sunday.

Six months before joining from Brighton & Hove Albion, the Argentinian was a key figure in his country’s run to lifting international football’s greatest prize in December 2022.

That experience unlocked something further in Mac Allister, who is set to contest a first showpiece with the Reds when they face Chelsea in the Carabao Cup decider at Wembley.

“I definitely want more. That is how I am,” he said.

“The World Cup helped me to realise that I really want to win more trophies and so Sunday is a big opportunity. It is what I wanted when I signed for the club.

“It will be my first final with Liverpool so it is going to be something very special for me and the team.

“We haven’t been thinking a lot about the final because we have had a lot of games, and Luton [on Wednesday night] was a big one, but now we can think about it and prepare well.”

Enjoying an impressive debut campaign with Liverpool, Mac Allister provided a pair of vital assists in the 4-1 comeback win over Luton Town in midweek.

That contribution followed a timely goal in the preceding Premier League victory at Brentford by the same scoreline.

In all, the No.10 has made 28 appearances for the Reds so far – and he detailed just how quickly he has felt at home at Anfield.

“It is crazy because since the first day here I really felt a connection that I have not felt at any other club,” said Mac Allister.

“At the other clubs it was about the time it took to settle. Here, from the first day the people helped me settle very well.

“I really feel a connection with the fans and the club and I really like it here. It is one of the biggest clubs in the world. Hopefully I will spend many years here.”
