Tatts, TV, food and mates at other clubs - Liverpool FC midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai gives us the lowdown on his body art, favourite foods, the series he streams and his friends at rival Premier League clubs…

When you were a teenager you got yourself tattooed with a quote from Steven Gerrard - “talent is a divine blessing, but without incredible will and humility, it means nothing.” How did that come about?

I had a bet with my dad. It was a running test at Salzburg in Austria. The whole Academy had to run. I wanted that tattoo so bad and he told me ‘if you win the test, if you are first in the whole Academy, you can have it’. So I was close to the end and they told me ‘you are not the first, yet’. So I said, ‘don't stop the treadmill, I'm going to run until I fall off, I need this tattoo!’ I just ran until I couldn't do it anymore and I won, so I have the tattoo. Say no more!

Why did you want that particular Steven Gerrard quote though?

Because that’s me, that’s how I started and that’s what I’m doing now. And when I’m a little bit down I read it again and tell it to myself. Then it starts again.

Because of that tattoo do you feel like it was your destiny to play for Liverpool and wear the same No.8 shirt that Gerrard did?

It was quite a long time ago so at that time I didn’t know I would [play for LFC], it was something I could just wish for. When it came to reality I just realised I am here, playing for Liverpool!

Earlier this year you posted an image on social media of a detailed new tattoo on your chest that has lots of different aspects to it. What does it all signify?

It is my life until now. I have a tree, like family. Then I have my favourite word [faith]. Then I have my numbers, my jersey numbers. All of them from playing 17, 14, 8, 10 and 13. I have [the word], balance, because I think it is important. I have the text ‘impossible’, but there is a line [through ‘IM’] so anything is possible. Then I have some little guys that are actually me standing always higher and higher - the sky's the limit, kind of. And I have the three words ‘enjoy the journey’.

Is your next tattoo going to be of winning a trophy for Liverpool FC?

I hope for it! When we won the Carabao Cup, I didn’t put it on me, but maybe. You never know. I would like to do something, but I have to think about it because this is for the rest of my life.

What TV series are you streaming at the moment?

I’m watching a Hungarian one, but of the American ones I liked Money Heist. I loved Prison Break - I watched it like three times - and everybody says Game of Thrones is very good, but I’ve never watched it. The thing is, if I like a series from the start I get interested, but if I get bored from the first couple of episodes I just stop it every time.

When you go out to eat, what kind of places do you visit and what are your favourite foods?

I like to try new restaurants. Up until now I’ve always stuck to the old ones because if I'm going out, I'm hungry, so I don't want to choose new ones. I don't want to take risks, so I know with the old ones I will like it, but now is the time that I like to try new ones as well. So I go to more than before. My favourite food is Hungarian food, but I like sushi and I like caviar a lot. Actually, I like everything.

You were teammates with Erling Haaland at RB Salzburg and after you signed for Liverpool FC you said he’d been in touch with advice on where to live. How much did you learn from playing alongside him?

I learned a lot from him because at this age [19] he was more mature than me. Even though he was only three months older than me it felt like he was three years older. He always used to do stuff like I could never imagine would help me, but with time I just realised ‘yeah, he had it right’, so I should have thought of those things at that time.

Who is your best mate in the Premier League outside of Liverpool?

In the Premier League…Milos Kerkez, at Bournemouth, who is also Hungarian. He's similar to me. He's a bit more crazy, but he still has time to grow up. I think he’s three years younger than me, so, yeah, we are similar types. When we go out he likes to do the same things that I do.

How does it feel to play for such a globally supported club?

Our fans are really everywhere. So when we were in Singapore last year we felt a huge, huge support there and when we were in the USA this year there was also huge support there. So it's always nice to see these guys who are maybe not able to come to Anfield every game, or maybe once a year. They are always welcome and we are just happy to have such good fans all over the world.

Finally, you scored your first goal of the season against AC Milan in the UEFA Champions League, but what is your favourite Liverpool FC goal so far?

Probably the one against Leicester City in the Carabao Cup. That was a quite nice one!
