INTERVIEW300 not out for Virgil
The Liverpool FC captain made his 300th appearance for the Reds against Ipswich Town FC at Anfield and to mark the milestone he’s been talking about his favourite memory, which away grounds he likes and how it would feel to be successful this season…
Virgil, congratulations on making 300 appearances for Liverpool FC. What is the best feeling you’ve had so far in a Red shirt?
I can say when the final whistle went after the Champions League final in 2019, I think it gave me a realisation that I actually won the Champions League. A year before, we lost it and obviously after all the hard work we put into the whole season, It was an incredible feeling. It was an incredible season as a group of players. I think also making your debut for the club is just something very special too and I will never forget mine against Everton.
What type of games do you enjoy playing in the most?
I like playing at the highest levels, playing against the best teams in the world. Whether it is in the Champions League or whether it is with your country against the best nations, I think you want to be playing teams that are the best or up there because you can play against the best players and the best managers. I think that's the enjoyable part of it. It will be hard and the games are often difficult, but those are the games you enjoy the most.
What has Arne Slot done differently tactically compared to Jürgen Klopp?
We should not start comparing, first and foremost. I think what Jürgen did over the years that he was at the club was remarkable, was outstanding - the success that we had. So we should not take any of that away. We should not also downgrade what he has done and then praise others. Obviously, things have changed. The new manager came in and changed certain things. I wouldn’t say a lot, but obviously certain things because he’s a different human being. But things have been going well and we have to keep going and let's see what the season brings.
What is Liverpool FC’s secret to rarely losing games even if you concede first?
I think it is the will and the mentality that we have. I think you go into the game to try and do everything in your power to win the game and there's 90 plus minutes to be played, so I think there's always going to be an opportunity to get back. We have the quality, we have the players and we have to believe and we have to fight and these things don't happen in life by just being there. You have to work for it. And I think that's what we have been doing throughout the whole season consistently and that's what we have to do for the rest of the season as well.
Fans watching on TV or online often see you shouting at your team mates. What kind of things do you say?
Well, if you're in the stadium, you probably hear me screaming! I think everyone hears me screaming, well, shouting names a lot and obviously about positioning, defending. These are normal things in order to prevent goals and to help each other out. So I think they’re the biggest things I would definitely be saying.
Away from Anfield, what is your favourite away ground?
I can say for the world that the Barcelona stadium [Camp Nou] was incredible and special. I’ve played there twice and lost twice, by the way, but I think it’s an amazing stadium. I think in the Premier League there are so many grounds that have great fans you can speak about. Obviously going to Old Trafford or to Villa Park or even Nottingham Forest, where the fans are intense and behind them, and Newcastle. In England we are very, very privileged to be playing in those kinds of atmospheres in stadiums where the fans are really trying to help that team. We are blessed.
Finally, how would it feel to win the Premier League or UEFA Champions League this season?
I think all the hard work you put in throughout the whole season will be all worth it. You know, to win either would be an amazing achievement. When we won the Premier League in 2022, we couldn’t properly celebrate it with our fans, unfortunately, but when we won the Champions League, we had an amazing party together with the fans and that's definitely something you try to do again. So that's what we are aiming for.
