HistoryWhy You'll Never Walk Alone is Liverpool FC's anthem
All history'You'll Never Walk Alone' has been Liverpool FC's anthem since debuting on the Kop in the early 1960s.
The original song dates back to 1945, written by Oscar Hammerstein and composed by Richard Rodgers for the Broadway musical Carousel.
Its infectious melody and powerful lyrics ensured it grew in popularity in the years after, with a raft of cover editions seeing it interpreted by Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra and many more.
In 1963, it was the turn of Liverpudlian band Gerry and the Pacemakers, and their version debuted in the UK charts in October that year.
When this rendition climbed to seventh, it was played at Anfield as part of the top 10 – as was typical before matches – when the Reds hosted West Bromwich Albion.
Supporters would sing along to the latest hit records, and You'll Never Walk Alone was an immediate favourite on the terraces.
On the final day of that month, the Pacemakers' YNWA reached No.1 in the charts to begin a four-week reign at the top.
Its connection with Liverpool, though, would last much, much longer.
When it initially dropped out of the UK top 10, fans complained about its absence from the Anfield playlist, asking, 'Where is our song?'
Ever since, the hymn – and its ethos – has become a fundamental element of the club's DNA, a tune with which to toast the greatest triumphs, to stand in defiance and to come together in low points and sorrows.
The vocals of Gerry Marsden, who passed away in January 2021, lead a chorus joined by all Reds fans before every fixture played at Anfield.
You'll Never Walk Alone lyrics
When you walk through a storm, hold your head up high
And don't be afraid of the dark
At the end of a storm, there's a golden sky
And the sweet, silver song of a lark
Walk on through the wind
Walk on through the rain
Though your dreams be tossed and blown
Walk on, walk on
With hope in your heart
And you'll never walk alone
You'll never walk alone
Walk on, walk on
With hope in your heart
And you'll never walk alone
You'll never walk alone
