Tommy Lucas played in Liverpool's defence for nearly a decade-and-a-half between the two World Wars.

Although he had spells when he was out of the side, his individual league appearance record for the club can only be bettered by a select group of Reds players.

As the Football League returned to being a national competition in 1919, Lucas made 16 appearances in one or other of the full-back positions.

There was fierce competition for shirt numbers two and three at that time and even though he played on 27 occasions for the 1921-22 championship-winning side, he was only called on once the next season.

He would, however, bounce back to make nearly 200 appearances in league and cup over the next five years.

1928-29 was another campaign when he was selected only occasionally but again with determination he forced himself back into the first-team picture and was one of two ever-presents, the other being Archie McPherson, during the 1930-31 league schedule.

But now approaching his mid-30s, he could no longer be sure of his place and the last of his 341 Football League games for Liverpool came in a home match against Arsenal on October 22, 1932.
