Ted Harston was a late bloomer who joined Liverpool for a British transfer record at the time in 1937, after scoring no fewer than 85 goals in 75 games for Mansfield Town in Division Three North.

<p>Amazingly, he scored 55 of Mansfield's total of 91 in the 1936-37 season.</p><p>Harston only played for the Reds on five occasions during the first half of the 1937-38 campaign. He scored after just 13 minutes of his debut at Chelsea on the opening day of the season, but Liverpool were thrashed 6-1.</p><p>He then netted twice in the next game when Portsmouth visited Anfield, though lost his place in the side to Fred Howe after four matches had been played.</p><p>His only other appearance for the first XI came when he replaced Howe at Blackpool towards the end of November 1937, a fixture the visitors won 1-0.</p><p>Harston then unfortunately broke his leg, which effectively finished his professional career.</p>
