Ted Harston was a late bloomer who joined Liverpool for a British transfer record at the time in 1937, after scoring no fewer than 85 goals in 75 games for Mansfield Town in Division Three North.

Amazingly, he scored 55 of Mansfield's total of 91 in the 1936-37 season.

Harston only played for the Reds on five occasions during the first half of the 1937-38 campaign. He scored after just 13 minutes of his debut at Chelsea on the opening day of the season, but Liverpool were thrashed 6-1.

He then netted twice in the next game when Portsmouth visited Anfield, though lost his place in the side to Fred Howe after four matches had been played.

His only other appearance for the first XI came when he replaced Howe at Blackpool towards the end of November 1937, a fixture the visitors won 1-0.

Harston then unfortunately broke his leg, which effectively finished his professional career.
