Sander Westerveld was signed for Liverpool by Gerard Houllier as a replacement for David James and Brad Friedel.

The Dutch goalkeeper joined the club from Vitesse Arnhem in the summer of 1999 and enjoyed an impressive debut season that included 14 league clean sheets.

Westerveld made a number of errors during his second year at Anfield but nevertheless started all but two of the Reds' 63 fixtures in 2000-01 as a cup treble was secured.

His best moment was undoubtedly saving a penalty against Birmingham City in Cardiff to hand Liverpool the League Cup and Houllier's first trophy as manager, after a shootout.

The Reds went on to lift the FA Cup and UEFA Cup too, while also achieving qualification back into the Champions League.

However, Westerveld's place was under threat and only three games into the next campaign he made an unfortunate mistake against Bolton Wanderers in the last minute of the match.

Houllier signalled his career at the club was over by recruiting not one but two goalkeepers on the same day with the arrivals of Jerzy Dudek and Chris Kirkland.

Westerveld departed in December 2001 and revived his career with a successful spell in Spain at Real Sociedad, helping the Basque club to runners-up in La Liga and Champions League qualification.
