Sam Bowyer made 45 league and three FA Cup appearances in Liverpool's forward line during the years that led up to the First World War.

<p>He played in four league matches in 1907-08, a season when the club used 29 different players in their First Division campaign.</p><p>Bowyer wasn't used as regularly in the team the next season, when his 14 appearances brought four goals, or in 1909-10 when he was called on for 13 games and found the net six times.</p><p>Fifteen more league matches and another four goals followed over the next two seasons, and Bowyer's most telling contribution for Liverpool in a cup tie was the two goals he scored in three minutes against Gainsborough Trinity in the middle of January 1911.</p>
