Sam Bowyer made 45 league and three FA Cup appearances in Liverpool's forward line during the years that led up to the First World War.

He played in four league matches in 1907-08, a season when the club used 29 different players in their First Division campaign.

Bowyer wasn't used as regularly in the team the next season, when his 14 appearances brought four goals, or in 1909-10 when he was called on for 13 games and found the net six times.

Fifteen more league matches and another four goals followed over the next two seasons, and Bowyer's most telling contribution for Liverpool in a cup tie was the two goals he scored in three minutes against Gainsborough Trinity in the middle of January 1911.
