Salif Diao joined Liverpool in 2002 alongside compatriot El Hadji Diouf after featuring for Senegal at that summer's World Cup.

A defensive-minded midfielder, Diao made 40 appearances during his debut season - roughly split from the start and the bench - as Gerard Houllier's side failed to build on their second-placed league finish of the previous campaign.

He played only seven times the next season, before getting 14 opportunities during the first half of 2004-05 following the appointment of Rafael Benitez as Reds manager.

A start in a Premier League win at Norwich City on the third day of 2005 proved to be Diao's last outing for the club.

He spent the remainder of the season on loan with Birmingham City and then made temporary moves to Portsmouth and Stoke City in the next two campaigns, ultimately signing for the latter on a permanent basis in 2007.
