Graeme Souness had long admired the talents of Paul Stewart before paying Tottenham Hotspur £2.5 million to bring him to Liverpool during the summer of 1992.

In his White Hart Lane days, Stewart had gone from a striker to a central midfielder with an eye for goal, and won three England caps under Graham Taylor.

He was in Terry Venables' Tottenham side that won the FA Cup in 1991 against Nottingham Forest and he scored in a 2-1 victory.

Shortly after arriving at Anfield, Stewart had looked impressive during the pre-season tour and made his Reds debut in the 4-3 Charity Shield defeat by Leeds United at Wembley.

He then marked his first Anfield outing with a goal in the 2-1 win over Sheffield United and scored on his European bow for the Reds with two goals in a 6-1 defeat of Apollon Limassol.

However, Stewart suffered niggling injury problems in his debut season that restricted his progress.

The following 1993-94 campaign saw Stewart out of favour for the opening seven games but he was restored to the side by Souness as a replacement for Jan Molby.

However, he was then dropped after a 3-0 defeat against Newcastle United at St. James' Park and didn't play again that season.

Stewart went out on loan to the likes of Crystal Palace, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Burnley before Peter Reid signed him for Sunderland in 1996.
