Nigel Spackman was a powerful midfielder who played in Liverpool's great 1987-88 team.

He had already clocked up more than 300 matches for AFC Bournemouth and Chelsea before arriving at Anfield in 1986 to strengthen the squad that had just won the league and FA Cup double.

Spackman was never much more than a squad player at the Reds but replaced the injured Ronnie Whelan with great distinction in 1987, and made a great contribution to that wonderful team playing alongside Steve McMahon in central midfield.

He won a championship medal in 1988 but also suffered the disappointment of two Wembley cup final defeats with the club - the 1987 League Cup against Arsenal and the FA Cup upset caused by Wimbledon a year later.

Halfway through the 1988-89 season, when it was clear that his chances of being a first-team regular were still limited, Spackman decided to return to London and joined Queens Park Rangers.
