'Run down the wing for me,' Liverpool fans urged Maxi Rodriguez each week. In truth, the Argentinian achieved so much more during two-and-a-half years representing the Reds.
Supporters had experienced a close glimpse of the tricky midfielder, who stunned the world with a sensational volley for his country at the 2006 World Cup, when he notched at Anfield in Atletico Madrid colours in November 2008.
Maxi was then brought to the club in January 2010 for a knockdown price by Rafael Benitez and instantly set about leaving a lasting legacy at Liverpool despite limited opportunities to impress.
The classy dribbler, who seemed to have the ball glued to his feet, made 17 appearances in his opening half-season and found the target once – away from home against Burnley.
Rodriguez was used sparingly during Roy Hodgson's short tenure but was reinvigorated by the arrival of Kenny Dalglish as manager, hitting seven goals in the final four fixtures of 2010-11, including trebles past Birmingham City and Fulham.
Playing time proved harder to come by for Maxi the following season after the summer arrivals of Jordan Henderson and Stewart Downing, but he did score two memorable and vital goals at Stamford Bridge.
He contributed to the Reds' runs to the League Cup and FA Cup finals and picked up a medal for the former competition, although he was an unused substitute in both showpiece matches.
In the summer of 2012, despite new manager Brendan Rodgers' interest in retaining Maxi's services, the Argentinian agreed a move back to former club Newell's Old Boys.
