Martin Kelly emerged from Liverpool's Academy as an outstanding young defender but was hampered by recurrent injuries across his six years around the first team.

After originally breaking into the club's reserves during 2007-08 and playing a key role as they claimed the league title, a senior Reds debut arrived as a substitute in a Champions League clash against PSV Eindhoven in December 2008.

Capable of excelling at either right-back or centre-back, the Englishman then headed to Huddersfield Town on loan to further his experience, playing seven times and claiming a first professional goal.

Upon his return to Liverpool came a landmark moment; Kelly earned a first start for the side, again in the Champions League, when Lyon visited Anfield in October 2009.

But injuries would become frustratingly prominent in the remainder of the campaign and beyond.

By 2011, however, and with Kenny Dalglish now at the managerial helm, Kelly flourished and showed encouraging Kopites exactly why he should be regarded as one of the most promising defenders in the country.

Among the highlights was a goal at Stamford Bridge that helped to carry Liverpool into the League Cup semi-finals, a competition they would go on to win in February 2012, although Kelly had to settle for a place on the bench as Cardiff City were downed on penalties at Wembley.

He did not feature in the subsequent FA Cup final either, but the recognition he had fostered in England was evident when he was drafted into the Three Lions' squad for Euro 2012 as a late call-up due to injuries.

Back at Anfield and with Brendan Rodgers in the dugout, the future seemed wholly bright for Kelly, only for a serious ACL rupture at the outset of 2012-13 to ruin the defender's hopes of finally grasping a permanent berth for the Reds.

He remained a committed member of the squad when fit and a regular name in the manager's matchday squad, but playing time was in short supply as Liverpool challenged for the championship a season later.

As Rodgers used the 2014 summer transfer window to strengthen his defensive options, a permanent move to Crystal Palace was arranged for Kelly.
