Liverpool swooped to sign Karl-Heinz Riedle in 1997 after Stan Collymore had left for Aston Villa.

The German striker arrived with an outstanding pedigree having previously represented the likes of Werder Bremen, Lazio and Borussia Dortmund.

Indeed, with the latter he had won a pair of Bundesliga titles and scored twice in the final against Juventus when they lifted the European Cup in 1997. He was also part of the Germany squad that won the World Cup in 1990.

Despite never being a regular in the side, Riedle - now into his 30s - passed double figures for goals scored for Liverpool across his first two seasons.

He signed a one-year extension to his Anfield contract, apparently ensuring his continued presence at the club into the new millennium.

However, with competition fierce for the strikers' positions at the Reds, Riedle decided to make the move to ambitious Division One side Fulham in September 1999 in the hope that he would once more find a regular first-team place.
