Johnny Morrissey came through the junior ranks at Liverpool before signing professional forms in the spring of 1957, soon after his 17th birthday.

<p>He played in the same position as Alan A'Court on the outside-left so his first-team possibilities were quite limited.</p><p>When the Liverpool board decided to sell him over Bill Shankly's head, though, the manager threatened to quit and actually wrote a resignation letter.</p><p>Morrissey, who was a tough customer and uncompromising on the field, did join Everton in 1962, where he won the championship and FA Cup and played more than 250 games.</p>
