Goalkeeper John Whitehead was picked for Liverpool's 'Test Match' against Bury at the end of the 1894-95 season.

<p>Two other players had shared duties between the posts during the 'regular' campaign.</p><p>Unfortunately, Liverpool lost the 'Test' played at neutral Blackburn and dropped down into the Second Division.</p><p>Whitehead figured twice more in 1895-96 with completely contrasting fortunes, a 5-1 home thrashing of Newcastle United being followed by a 5-2 defeat at Newton Heath (later to become Manchester United).</p>
