John Welsh joined Liverpool at the age of 10 and after coming through the Academy was the reserve-team captain.

<p>Despite some promising displays and being a regular for England U21s, he found opportunities for the Reds under Gerard Houllier limited, particularly after the arrival of Salif Diao.</p><p>He debuted as a substitute in the League Cup tie with Ipswich Town at Anfield in December 2002.</p><p>The midfielder made two more appearances off the bench early in the 2003-04 campaign and then featured on seven occasions in the next season following the appointment of Rafael Benitez as manager.</p><p>Welsh joined Hull City in the 2005-06 season.</p>
