John Ogston won the Scottish Junior Cup at Banks O'Dee in 1957 and shortly after that joined his local side, Aberdeen.

After spending three years as the Dons' reserve goalkeeper, he became their No.1 from 1960 to 1965, making a total of 230 appearances.

He was signed by Bill Shankly as a deputy to Tommy Lawrence, but in four years he only played one game for Liverpool, in a 3-1 league victory over Newcastle United on April 7, 1967.

Ogston went initially on loan to Doncaster Rovers in August 1968, before being sold to them permanently in July 1969 as Ray Clemence was establishing himself as the Reds' No.1.
