John Nicholson was understudy to Dick White and managed to make one appearance for Liverpool in the 1959-60 season.

<p>It was the only league match White missed during the whole campaign and he was to make the centre-back position his own during the next season too.</p><p>But just as White's career was finishing, Ron Yeats arrived at Anfield and it was clear Nicholson had no future with the club.</p><p>He left for Port Vale in August 1961.</p>
