John McLean figured four times as a full-back for Liverpool early in the 1903-04 season.

<p>The second player of that name for the club, he actually played in four of the first eight First Division matches that season, games which resulted in three defeats and one draw.</p><p>It was a pattern that was to become all too familiar during the rest of the season and the Reds were eventually relegated from the top flight with only 26 points from 34 fixtures.</p>
