John McCartney was a tough-tackling half-back who played in Liverpool's first ever season in the Football League (1893-94) on 16 occasions.

<p>Liverpool were promoted as Second Division champions but made an immediate return to Division Two a year later after losing the Test Match to Bury at Ewood Park, Blackburn.</p><p>McCartney missed a number of matches in the regular season of 1895-96 as the club again won the Second Division title but played in all four of the Tests as First Division status was regained.</p><p>He remained at Anfield for another two seasons, being an ever-present in 1896-97 and missing just three matches a year later.</p>
