Jimmy Payne was a skilful and tricky right winger for Liverpool, beating man after man for fun.

Although he did spend part of the 1951-52 season at inside-left, a position he was not really suited to.

The Scouser had debuted for his hometown club against Bolton Wanderers at Anfield on September 11, 1948.

But after the heady championship days of 1947, the Reds' fortunes gradually declined and they were eventually relegated to the Second Division at the end of the 1953-54 season.

Payne struggled with injuries in the latter part of his Liverpool career, lost his form and the crowd seemed to turn against him.

He eventually signed for Everton in April 1956 but his spell there was a brief one; he played six games and scored two goals, then retired from the game before his 30th birthday.
