Scotsman Jim Harley was one of all too many players whose professional careers were cut short by the Second World War.

<p>He first played for Liverpool in one of the full-back positions during the 1935-36 season but didn't establish himself in the side until 1937-38.</p><p>Harley also played in the three league fixtures that started the 1939-40 campaign before the national leagues were abandoned in favour of regional ones. During wartime he won Scotland international honours.</p><p>When league football resumed after the war, he made 17 appearances as a member of the 1946-47 squad that secured the club's fifth First Division championship.</p><p>But he had passed his 30th birthday during that season and would only be selected on another 21 occasions in his eighth and final year at Anfield.</p>
