Gerard Houllier's first signing, Jean-Michel Ferri was called "the Machine" because of his work-rate.

<p>He arrived at Liverpool in late 1998 as cover for Paul Ince in midfield but struggled with injury.</p><p>Ferri made his debut three months after making the move to Merseyside, but after one other substitute appearance he left the club for the same fee Houllier paid for him, joining Sochaux in the summer of 1999.</p>
