Jack (or John T. to give him his correct name and initial) Smith had played amateur football for Bromborough on the Wirral before signing professional forms for Liverpool in March 1951 when he was 23 years old.
The Birkenhead-born centre-forward scored after 18 minutes of his debut for the club when Derby County were beaten 2-0 at Anfield in September 1951.
He netted in three of his first four appearances but only managed another three goals in the remaining 23 First Division fixtures he was selected for that season.
A year later he scored eight times from the same number of league matches (27) but only figured in three league games during the club's relegation year of 1953-54, after which he was transferred to Torquay United.
