HistoryHow Liverpool FC was founded in 1892
All historyLiverpool FC officially came into existence on Friday June 3, 1892.
The process that led to the club's creation had actually begun almost three months earlier.
On March 15 that year, the Reds' founder – John Houlding – and his allies cut ties with Everton FC, for whom he had hitherto served as president, and set about launching a new team.
Formed in 1878, Everton had been playing matches at Anfield, with Houlding having leased land near his home for the purpose. He then bought the plot outright in 1885.
Everton won the First Division there in 1891, too.
But away from the pitch, increasing tensions between Houlding and the club's committee – including a dispute over the cost of renting Anfield – led to the historic split of March 15, 1892 after a vote to eject Houlding.
The decision would have huge ramifications for football on Merseyside.
Everton departed Anfield and set up base nearby at Mere Green Field, later to become Goodison Park.
Left with a venue but no side to play there, Houlding and his associates simply founded a new one – to be called Liverpool Football Club and Athletic Grounds Limited.
This fresh venture was officially ratified by the Board of Trade on June 3, 1892 and LFC was born.
